    Here I go again – first recall on 2016 GSA (clutch slave) which I didn’t even know about till I brought it in for the 1 year/6000 mile service. Then I get the dreaded “somethings broke” call from service department. The crimping on the upper stanchion is bad and failed. According to tech when the test rode after service they were shocked that it occurred because it’s very dangerous. So now parts are ordered and blah blah don’t get bike back for several days..

    So help me out. – what is this issue, anyone ever had it happen and what could have happened? I googled the stanchion on fiche but did not note an upper and lower nor a crimp.

    who cares what could have happened. your bike is being fixed under warranty as we speak. hope you got a loaner for the time being.

    You are right – that’s water under the bridge. I am more looking to be educated on what the upper stanchion crimping is, how it works, how it could have failed etc.

    Interesting, I recall a similar recall on the very first 1200 GSWs in 2013. Seems the Canadians caught the issue after a few were already on the road. All of the early GSWs were recalled for the mod involving a special tool sent to the dealers.

    Your dealer is right, if the cast upper piece separated from the steel tube you would loose steering control. In this case your dealer did good in spotting the impending issue. This is the first case I have heard of since the introduction of the GSW in 2013.

    Everyone should pull the rubber boot down to insure the fork tube is tightly fitted the the cast aluminum cap. That cap is what locates the top the tube to the upper tree through a spherical bearing.

    Glad the tech found it at service time and not me finding it hitting a pot hole on highway!

    Two week ago I took the my new GSA 2016 from the BMW dealer and on my way home I drove over a street pothole. Both inner fork tubes deformed and bent.
    Did anyone had this problem ?
    I asked the BMW dealer for the guarantee and they told me BMW said I should repare it (pay for it) before they look at the broken parts.

    Obviously, look the bike over pretty good. I’d really focus on the front rim. A hit that hard would have to damage the rim I would think unless there’s some real defect in the forks.

    Can someone please explain to me why BMW chose to engineer an upper fork tube this way with an outer sleeve, why not a one piece fork tube that inserts into a triple clamp like 99% of motorcycles. I have a 2017 GSA Triple Black coming in, seeing a failure like this for a bike this expensive is a bit perplexing.

    The telelever front suspension requires the top of the fork tubes pivot. On some other models they put a ball joint as the top central pivot point and used a traditional top triple clamp.

    I was on a ride in SA in September with a group. Day 11 one of our guys went down. He is an extremely good rider. Travelling on a dead straight road, speed between 120 and 140KPH. He claims the front end just fell away and he went down. There was NOTHING to hit on the road and NO potholes. The bike slide for 100 plus meters and came to rest on the side of the road. He was OK except for a couple of scratches and some bruising…very lucky boy. He was adamant the frontend just collapsed on him and tucked under the bike. I believe BMW SA engineer was called in to investigate. I haven’t heard the out come of the investigation.
